What we do
York Against Cancer’s mission is to make a difference to everybody affected by cancer – whether you’re a patient, a carer, or a loved one. As an independent local charity, we offer services to residents in the York, Selby, Malton and Scarborough areas.
If you’ve been affected by cancer, we understand that this goes far beyond the treatment itself. That’s why York Against Cancer strives to offer a whole range of local cancer services, including counselling, benefits advice, respite breaks, transport to treatments and much more.
Since 1987, we’ve helped to raise more than £15 million to improve the lives of local people affected by this life-changing disease. We could not do this without the incredible support of Yorkshire businesses, organisations, groups, schools and individuals.
Using local connections to help you
From building new departments at York Hospital to funding lifesaving research, we really count on our local connections to help people like you when you need it most.
The Leveson Centre
The Leveson Centre, a support centre for people living with cancer, opened in 2023 at the York Community Stadium in Huntington. The Centre offers a space away from a clinical environment to pop in for a cuppa and a chat or receive complementary therapy alongside the clinical treatments provided at York Hospital.
Mobile chemotherapy
If you’re not in York, you can still benefit from our help. Our mobile chemotherapy unit covers the outlying areas of North and East Yorkshire.
We launched this service in 2017, and it has been instrumental in helping those who cannot get to York or Scarborough Hospitals.
Getting you there
We understand that not every treatment is available on your doorstep – including radiotherapy. That’s why we offer a free minibus service to St James’ Hospital in Leeds, with door-to-door pick-ups and drop-offs. Every year we cover 17,500 miles and look forward to helping even more of you for many years to come.
Taking a break
Undergoing cancer treatment is one of the biggest mental and physical tolls you can face. That’s why we offer cancer patients and their families free short breaks to our Filey and Yapham respite homes. More than 200 people each year can get away from it all and enjoy some much needed sea air.
There is also a range of complementary therapies at the brand-new Leveson Centre, a support centre for people living with cancer – including aromatherapy, reflexology, reiki and hypnotherapy. We understand that you’re going through an incredibly difficult time, and do all we can to relieve stress with natural healing treatments.
Raising awareness
The biggest challenge when it comes to fighting cancer is education. We do our best to raise awareness of the disease, whether it’s through fundraising events or holding talks at local schools and businesses.
Cancer research also forms a central pillar of the work we do. We’ve led a five-year funding plan into bladder cancer research at the Jack Birch Unit at the University of York. We’ve also donated dermatoscopes to York GP surgeries to help doctors diagnose skin cancer.
