Our mobile chemotherapy unit
In 2017, York Against Cancer was proud to launch Yorkshire’s first mobile chemotherapy unit. The £700,000 mobile treatment centre offers systemic anti-cancer treatments and supportive treatments inside a vehicle, which moves to different locations to give more patients treatment access.
The unit was designed to help those living on the outskirts of York and Scarborough to reduce their travel times.
In its first year and a half, the unit saw more than 1,500 visits, with some patients visiting more than 20 times.
How does the mobile chemotherapy unit work?
The unit travels to outlying areas of York, catering for those who live in more remote areas. Specifically, it covers areas such as:
- Bridlington
- Malton
- Selby
- Scarborough.
This helps people save essential time travelling. The unit moves to a different site on the same day each week.
How do treatments work?
When you visit a mobile chemotherapy unit, you’ll still have access to the same multi-disciplinary teams that work at your local hospital. The units are staffed by two trained nurses and a healthcare assistant each day. They work on rotation, so you may not always see the same person – but you’ll still have the same high standards of care.
Treatments can take as little as 15 minutes, making the unit a convenient alternative to travelling into Scarborough or York. There are even teas and coffees available with the help of our friendly drivers.
Is the unit safe?
Treatments available on the unit are carefully risk assessed to be suitable in a mobile environment. The unit is well equipped to manage any issues that would arise and staff are highly trained to respond to your needs. The unit was custom-built with the assistance of clinical, transport, estates and facilities, IT and infection prevention teams.
Booking in with the mobile chemotherapy unit
If you’ve been referred for chemotherapy treatment by your doctor, our mobile chemotherapy unit may be closer than your nearest hospital.
Please discuss with your hospital consultant or chemotherapy nurse if you are interested in having treatment on the MCU. You will always start your treatment at one of the main sites before transferring to the MCU.
