York Against Cancer says goodbye to its long serving Chief Executive

After 20 years heading up local cancer charity York Against Cancer, Julie Russell, CEO, has decided to announce her retirement in December.

Julie joined the Charity in 2005 and has overseen significant expansion of the Charity during her time in the role. She was key to the planning of the 30 year celebrations of York Against Cancer in 2017 and has worked tirelessly alongside local businesses and three Lord Mayors to ensure the continued success of the Charity.

Julie commented: “20 years have flown by, and it is hard to believe that so much has happened with the Charity in that time. I am proud of my contribution and that of all my wonderful colleagues and our army of volunteers”.

York Against Cancer is well known for the support it offers within local Yorkshire communities to those affected by cancer and of the internationally recognised research carried out in the Jack Birch Unit at the University of York.

Julie has overseen the purchase of the respite care house in Filey, ensured minibus transport runs to Leeds for radiotherapy treatment and was delighted to be involved with the launch of the Mobile Chemotherapy Unit that operates around North Yorkshire. She also was instrumental in the Leveson Centre project at the Community Stadium where patients, friends and family can drop in at any time during opening hours.

Ian Yeowart, Chair of the Charity said: “Julie has been a wonderful servant of the Charity and has overseen some significant changes during her time at the helm, and we wish her a long and happy retirement”.

The task of recruiting a new CEO is underway and the Charity is looking forward to a new chapter with all the opportunities it presents in the coming years.
