A Message from Stephen Fry this Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
This Prostate Cancer Awareness month, we are honoured to share a message from Stephen Fry, urging people to spread the word about the importance of early prostate cancer diagnosis through signing up to our charity fun run, R U Taking the P…?
Sir Stephen Fry was diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer in 2017. Without early diagnosis, he has shared that he wouldn’t be alive today.
Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK. 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer, and if you are black, your risk is double. Early diagnosis is crucial, as it makes it much easier to treat – for prostate cancer found at Stage 1 and Stage 2, almost everyone will survive their cancer for 5 years or more after they are diagnosed. For prostate cancer found at Stage 4, this reduces to 50%.
In his video, Sir Stephen has urged the importance of getting this message across, and doing it in a “fun way – as York is doing.”
On Father’s Day, 21st June, we will be holding our annual 5K / 10K fun run, R U Taking the P…? which aims to raise awareness of prostate cancer while raising vital funds to support cancer patients and their loved ones across the region.
The run was established by York hairdresser Brian Hughes, a founder of Knavesmire Harriers, who was inspired to fundraise after a friend lost his life to prostate cancer.
R U Taking the P…? will set off from Rowntree Park at 9:30am on 21st June and is open to anyone aged 8+. Click here to sign up!
