Specialist iCANmove exercise sessions for people affected by cancer. First 5 free!

23 Sep 2021

Did you know York Against Cancer fund exercise classes which are delivered by level 4 cancer qualified ‘Exercise Rehab Specialists’ in conjunction with the Healthwise programme – the exercise referral programme ran through Better York leisure centres.

The sessions take place on Wednesdays 1-2pm at the Better York leisure centre and are available for patients in York and surrounding areas within one year of treatment.

Exercise Instructor Jason Feavers says “These sessions encourage a healthy lifestyle and help maintain patients’ wellbeing.

Studies have shown that physical activity levels tend to reduce significantly after a cancer diagnosis and remain low for many years after treatment is completed. From this baseline there is therefore great scope for exercise interventions to improve the health and wellbeing of patients with cancer.

We’ll carry out an assessment so we can help design effective programmes of exercise and help people overcome barriers to being more active after cancer treatment.

The sessions have been gratefully funded by York Against Cancer since the launch of the iCANmove classes back in 2015.”

Chris, who attends the classes, said “I am over 60 and had never been in a gym before and now I quite enjoy it. I went on a bike last week – I’d never done that in my life!

It’s definitely helping!

I used the York Against Cancer minibus for 3 weeks whilst undergoing cancer treatment and it took all the stress out travel. I made some great friends and I’m still in touch with them all – we’re now ladies that lunch”.

York Against Cancer General Manager, Julie Russell said “We fund these classes to encourage people affected by cancer to increase and/or maintain their physical activity as research has shown that exercise is really beneficial for recovery.

We pay for the first 5 sessions to incentivise people to restart exercise after a cancer diagnosis.

We’re delighted to have brought these classes in to York Stadium Leisure Complex – home of York Against Cancer HQ – taking place every Wednesday at 1-2pm”.

York Against Cancer fund a variety of workouts to suit personal preferences and fitness/ confidence levels including:
