Johns Hopkins Professor Visits the JBU
01 May 2024
In April, the Jack Birch Unit were pleased to be joined by Dr David McConkey, Director of the Johns Hopkins Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute and Professor in the Department of Urology at Johns Hopkins Medical School.
York Against Cancer has funded the JBU at the University of York since our earliest days, supporting their research into the treatment and prevention of bladder cancer. This visit from Dr McConkey marks an incredible opportunity to foster collaborations between the institutions and discuss their findings.

Research in Dr McConkey’s laboratory uses genomics to define the molecular mechanisms involved in bladder cancer progressions and developing novel therapies for muscle-invasive and metastatic disease. During his visit to the JBU, Dr McConkey joined a workshop on AI and Machine Learning, where JBU PhD student Vlad Ungureanu presented his research on bladder cancer.
The JBU later welcomed Dr McConkey to their weekly lab meeting, discussing areas of collaboration in bladder cancer research and offering a tour of their facilities.
