On Saturday 28 May, the LNER Community Stadium hosted the York Minster Engineering Football League Cup Final in aid of York Against Cancer raising an incredible £3,723 for the charity.
Local football teams battled it out with Rawcliffe winning the Senior Cup and Garforth LG winning the Junior Cup.
Ian Yeowart, Chair of York Against Cancer, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people supporting local football. 518 tickets for the event were sold in advance plus 28 hospitality tickets and then a further 166 on the day – all proceeds going to local cancer charity York Against Cancer. Thank you to everyone who helped organise the event and those bought a ticket and cheered on the teams.
Special thank you to event sponsor JMD Developments of Wetherby – without their significant sponsorship the event would not be possible. We’re incredibly grateful.”

York Against Cancer CEO, Julie Russell said, “We relocated to the LNER Community Stadium last May, so we celebrated one year at HQ with an awareness day alongside the football event which raised a further £663.93.
We had an information stand to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer symptoms and the importance of screening, the scientists from the York Against Cancer funded Jack Birch Unit were on hand to answer questions about their lifesaving research into bladder cancer – as well as the usual cake and tombola stalls. It all came together nicely to raise much needed funds for the charity”.
