Northern Soul Night raises £1,325 for cancer
28 Feb 2022
York Against Cancer supporter and fundraiser Mick Burnett, and partner June, organised a Soul Music charity fundraiser at Bishopthorpe Social Club on Saturday 26 February 2022 attended by 120 ‘soulies’ at £10- a ticket.
Mick said “I’m a keen fundraiser and have organised and taken part in many charity events over the years – always raising money for cancer care within the local area.
I started fundraising when my late wife was diagnosed with cancer, mainly soul nights & walking challenges. When I met my partner June, the fundraising was still ongoing, then sadly June was diagnosed with blood cancer. So many families are affected by the disease, so I’m keen to carry on raising money and hopefully help others.”
The sold-out event was a huge success and raised a magnificent £1,325. The playlist included Northern Soul classics, Tamla Motown, and club-classics played by local DJ’s Mick Burnett, Steve Bradley, Kev Bainbridge and Nick Beilby.
Mick went on to say, “It was a brilliant night, the dance floor was full, and people kept saying how happy and grateful they were to be out socializing after a tough couple of years. Personal thanks to everyone that contributed to the night, including Bishopthorpe Social Club, the DJ’s, people that kindly donated raffle prizes and everyone that bought a ticket.”
Julie Russell – General Manager at York Against Cancer went on to say “Thank you to Michael and June, the DJ’s that gave up their time and talent on the night and to everyone who bought tickets for the event and the raffle. Sounds like it was a great night and what a fantastic amount raised for local cancer care”.
