Gilbert the Pig and The Gilbert Girls
03 Feb 2022
Gilbert, a four-year-old micro pig, and a group of ladies – The Gilbert Girls – from York have been fundraising for York Against Cancer.
Gilbert’s owner Collette Wright adopted Gilbert from Beetle Bank Farm as an orphan piglet when he’d been rejected by his mother. He now lives with her as a much-loved pet on a field off Stockton Lane, near York.
“I’d lost both my parents and dog, Roger, within a short time and was feeling lost and low when my friend, Judith, suggested we go for a coffee at Beetle Bank Farm.
I met Gilbert there, he was just 2 days old & I more or less said yes, I’d have him straight away. I brought him home at 10 weeks and he’s inspired my poetry ever since.” said Collette.
Collette and a group of friends – Stella, Anne, Pauline, Anita, and Adriana – formed a fun and friendship group called ‘The Gilbert Girls’. They meet at Talking Tea Pot – Tiny Tea Room in Tollerton every week and sew felt pigs to sell and fundraise for charity. Collette also writes poems inspired by Gilbert.
So far, they have raised £300 for York Rocks Against Cancer – our live music fundraiser set for July 2022 at York Barbican. The money raised will help offset the costs associated with staging the event. The group also donated a ‘piggy planter’ for a Jorvik Radio raffle prize in aid of York Against Cancer.
