Assize of Ale 2025

Organised by the Civic Party, join us for the annual ‘Sheriff of York Assize of Ale’ event from 11:30 at St Helens Square, York with live music, magnificent owls, York’s Town Crier and much more with the Sheriff’s formal declaration from the Mansion House stairs at 12:30 ahead of the infamous ale trail.

The Sheriff of York and all participants will visit several ale houses across the city so the Sheriff can taste the ale and declare its worthiness to be served. What’s more, money is raised for the civic charities including – Family Matters York, The Royal British Legion and York Against Cancer. This is a fun, annual traditional event and Medieval dress is encouraged but not compulsory.
