Education and Awareness
At York Against Cancer, we believe that cancer awareness is the first step towards cancer prevention. We’re proud to work with the local community on various awareness schemes, as well as promote events that educate us all about the many different ways that cancer can affect us.
Working with primary schools
As part of our awareness work, we regularly hold talks and presentations in primary schools to teach children about cancer prevention. One of our most significant presentations discusses sun protection, and how to stay safe to prevent skin cancer.
We offer primary school education packs called ‘Young and Healthy’, which encourage healthy lifestyles for children up to year 6, touching on topics such as diet, smoking and alcohol.
You can access these information packs online or pop into our offices for more pamphlets and other information on healthy lifestyles for young people.

Working with secondary schools
For secondary schools, we have created a number of teaching resources to complement the existing curriculum and challenge students’ knowledge about cancer. Our teaching materials cover topics such as smoking, drugs and sexual health, and their connections to cancer.
ENTHUSE partnerships aim to inspire young people into STEM subjects and careers, using educational programmes in schools. With this investment, school children in North Yorkshire will be able to learn crucial lessons about cancer.
Speaking to local businesses
Often, our volunteers will hold presentations at local businesses in and around York to discuss the realities of living with cancer. Many of our volunteer speakers have had cancer themselves, and can give staff a first-hand account of what to expect.
These talks are also essential because they give employers more information on how to handle time off and working hours for those who need it, while employees themselves benefit from added assurance. They outline the services York Against Cancer provides should anybody need us, and they’re also great fundraising opportunities.
Cancer Champions
We work with the Humber, Coast and Vale Alliance to provide free awareness sessions teaching people about the signs, symptoms and screening programmes for a number of cancers. Spreading awareness and encouraging conversation can help reduce the risk of cancers and aid early detection of the disease.
