Health Care Assistant
If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, you may feel overwhelmed, scared, anxious or even angry. York Against Cancer is here to help you with all the resources you need – including access to information, relaxing therapies, transport and healthcare assistance.
Sometimes you may need practical help at home. This may be with personal hygiene, mobility or preparing a meal, or it may be that you need someone to be around whilst your loved one gets a good night’s sleep.
We fund a Healthcare Assistant who can give you and your family this type of support.
What can a healthcare assistant do?
Depending on your assistant’s working hours, level of training and expertise, he or she may be able to:
- Refer you to the most appropriate medical professional if he/she cannot answer your questions
- Assist with mobility, such as helping you in and out of bed
- Assist you with bathing and your personal hygiene
- Assist you with preparing a meal
- Offer night or day sits, giving your loved one some time out or a good night’s sleep
- Provide general support, both practical and emotional.
How to get support from a healthcare assistant
When your treatment begins, you will be assigned a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) which will include a clinical nurse specialist (CNS). If you need practical help in the home, your CNS can direct you to access this type of support.
