Managing cancer
The cancer diagnosis and treatment process does more than take a physical toll on your body. It’s perfectly normal to experience a roller coaster of emotions, from hearing the news to getting better and adjusting to life afterwards.
Remember that there is no right or wrong way to feel. You may feel anxious, scared, angry, confused or alone. With York Against Cancer’s help, there is always somewhere to turn.
Diagnosis: managing the stress of cancer
At this stage, you may be experiencing confusion over treatment options, or worry for how your family is going to cope. It’s not uncommon to notice short-term bouts of anxiety as you adjust to the news. You can overcome these symptoms with trusted techniques, and support from local services.
Managing cancer treatment side effects
Your treatment may be short-term, such as a number of radiotherapy or chemotherapy sessions, or there may be long-term adjustments. Throughout your treatment, your local healthcare team will be on-hand to answer any questions you may have about side effects.
Treatment may also affect your confidence and overall mental health. You can speak to local services who will give you advice on returning to work, building confidence, and speaking to mental health professionals.
Life beyond cancer
Life after cancer, for some, may require some long-term adjustments, or simple changes to help you manage pain and recover. If your treatment options are limited, you may also need some help getting palliative care and support.
There are multiple resources online, plus local services in York, to answer your questions. After your treatment, it’s essential not to put undue pressure on yourself. Your work, family and friends will understand the immense physical and emotional stress you’ve been through. Take everything one day at a time – you may find solace in writing things down, taking up a new hobby, or talking to others.
Giving something back
At some point in the future, you may wish to give something back to those who were there for you throughout your journey. Some patients like to volunteer their time or give a legacy donation of cash to ensure charities like York Against Cancer keep supporting people for years to come.
