Where The Money Goes
When York Against Cancer was founded in 1987, it was dedicated to improving the lives of cancer patients, their carers and families in York and surrounding area. We do this in several ways:
Research
We help further research into cancer by funding research scientists and equipment at the Jack Birch Unit of Molecular Carcinogenesis at the University of York.
The unit has both a national and international reputation and particularly focuses on epithelial cancers of the bladder. Ongoing work includes a collaborative project with surgeons at York Hospital to study how colorectal cancers spread to the liver.
They have made significant developments in the signalling pathway of cancer cells and tissue-engineering strategies for the bladder.
We do not support any research work involving animal testing.
Education
York Against Cancer aims to spread knowledge about cancer as widely as possible. We do this in three ways:
- by educating school children about cancer and dispelling the myths
- by educating the community through information supplements.
- by providing information and training to healthcare professionals.
Our groundbreaking initiative ‘Cancer – Dispelling the Myths’– a lesson plan with support materials – has been adopted by secondary schools in the York area and is attracting interest from elsewhere in the UK. click here.
We are equally committed to educating the community and produce supplements published in our local paper The Press twice a year.
Collaborating with York Hospital
We started the charity to bring together clinicians at York Hospital and research scientists at the University of York to further both the understanding of cancer and development of preventions and treatments.
We continue to support the cancer care centre as a focal point for information and services such as complementary therapies including aromatherapy, reflexology and reiki. At the centre we initiated a counselling service people affected by cancer which consists of a psychiatrist, psychologist and specialist psycho-oncology nurse and we helped introduce and a team of specialist oncology nurses.
