Fundraising
York Against Cancer relies on the amazing generosity of local people who support us in a number of different ways. Their contribution - whether a few pounds or many thousands – ensures that we are able to continue the valuable work we do to benefit local people affected by cancer.
Fundraising Events
Fundraising events are held regularly throughout the year in York and the surrounding area – some are organised by the charity, others by our fundraising committee – but a large number are simply organised by individuals who run, walk, slim, skydive or take part in a whole variety of activities in order to raise much needed funds. Shops
Another source of income is our shop in Huntington selling gifts and cards (it is worth noting that we do not sell second-hand goods). Twice a week, we also have a stall in the foyer or main reception at York Hospital.
Each Christmas we rely on the generosity of local property companies to give us a temporary Christmas Shop in York City Centre over the festive season.
Legacies, Bequests and Give as you Earn
Like many national charities, one of our main sources of income comes from people leaving us money in their will. We have a simple leaflet explaining the benefits of the numerous different types of bequest – though most people prefer to take advice from their solicitor.
It is not always necessary to leave money to benefit as charity - people can leave property, shares or any items if value – again, a solicitor can advise on how to do this.
Finally, we are appealing to companies to ensure that their employees are able to benefit from the tax efficiencies of Give as you Earn (GAYE) schemes – where money is taken direct from their wages/ salaries.
Internet Schemes such as JustGiving.com
Finally, we have embraced the digital age with membership of a scheme called Just Giving. This enables individuals to donate or take part in fundraising events and get others to donate to York Against Cancer. Full details can be found at www.justgiving.com
