Education
Cancer is no respecter of age and therefore it is important that youngsters know something of the facts about cancer, even if only to help to dispel some of the myths surrounding it.
Young get to grips with cancer
Young people have considerable awareness of the issues surrounding cancer and its treatment, a survey of York school children reveals.
Many had been ‘touched’ by cancer and almost everyone saw the importance of cancer education.
Following consultations with a variety of local schools York Against Cancer has commissioned and developed teaching aids in the form of lessons and courses for both primary and secondary schools.
The first to be developed was for secondary schools where young people have consderable awareness of cancer and its treatment. Many had been 'touched' by cancer amongst their family or friends and everyone saw the importance of cancer education.
Following the launch of this the charity was approached by several primary schools who felt that there was significant educational benefit in something being produced for younger children. A further course was then designed but this time the emphasis was on health.
Primary school Health Course
YOUNG AND HEALTHY
This Series of 19 lesson ideas and two possible assemblies stretches over the first two Key Stages and has been carefully planned to fit in with the guidelines of the National Curriculum.
The complete pack has been supplied to all local primary schools and includes hard copy suggested lessons, games and relevant handouts to assist with the teaching and learning. In addition the whole course has been placed on a memory stick in order to faciliate its use, particularly when using the internet references for a selection of recommended learning experiences.
It should be emphasised that the lesson guides have been designed to require the minimum amount of preparation and each lesson has a quantity of background material which may be of interest to the teacher.
Hard copies and memory sticks are available for the Primary School Pack from theYork Against Cancer office in Huntington on 01904 764466
The complete series is now available to be downloaded from this site.
Secondary Course about Cancer
CANCER - DISPELLING THE MYTHS
The pack has been designed to be taught as part of a school’s PSHE (Personal, social and health education) programme
The five-lesson programme begins with a brainstorm session to determine what the pupils know about cancer – including where their information comes from – such as personal experience, the media of TV dramas.
This is followed by a card game – a series of true or false questions designed to test the knowledge of pupils and reveal their assumptions about cancer.
Subsequent lessons deal with a more detailed look at Cancer – its causes, how to reduce the risks, diet and exercise and life balance.
“We know from our research that many children have misconceptions about cancer,” said Keith Hayton, former headteacher now Honorary Administrator with the charity and instigator of the cancer education programme.
“Our programme is designed to set the record straight – and to give them some lifestyle advice on how to avoid cancers.”
The programme pulls no punches in terms of the information it delivers to its target audience. For example, the presentation reveals that cancer will affect one in three people – and for one in four the disease will prove fatal. Despite producing cancer cells every single day, two thirds of us will never contract cancer; of those that do, 75 per cent will beat it.
Hard copies and a powerpoint CD are available for the Secondary pack from the York Against Cancer office in Huntington on 01904 764466.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION The course for secondary school and college students was designed in 2006 with lots of cooperation and piloting of material in local schools. The aim is to provide a comprehensive information pack about both cancer and associated health matters which can be delivered by a teacher with the absolute minimum of preparation and prior knowledge. When developing the course we were mindful of the pressures on teachers and the difficulty of finding suitable material. In the way the course has been produced it can be used in several ways: • As a straightforward 5 lesson course with Power Point support material • As a long ‘half-day’ session • Individual lessons can be used as a stand alone • The information can be used as a source for more advanced project work • Although designed primarily as a Health Education course for PSHE work it can be a useful addition to Biology and specific Health and Social Care courses.
