Cancer Care

Cancer Care

Early in the charity's history, we funded specialist oncology nurses to help look after patients diagnosed with cancer. Altogether, we funded six such posts - which were eventually taken over by the NHS.

To celebrate our tenth anniversary, we launched an appeal in conjunction with the York Press to raise money for the Cancer Care Centre - a focal point for patients with cancer, where they could receive information, and innovative treatments such as complemtary therapies designed to improve their quality of life.

In 2003, we launched a psycho-oncology service to help patients cope with their cancer diagnosis. Funding for this extremely successful service was also taken over by the NHS.

Research with patients and healthcare professionals showed that travelling to Leeds for radiotherapy was often a major problem for people from York and the surrounding area.... so, in 2007 following a major appeal, we began operating a daily mini bus service - which has proved an enormous success.

People diagnosed with Cancer are understandably devastated - but improved diagnosis and treatment means more people are surviving this dreadful disease. However, people often face financial and practical difficulties through being unable to work during their treatment. Caring for a spouse, or even young families, can prove very difficult... and so we have funded a number of posts for care workers to help people affected byt cancer to cope with life.

These are just some examples of our work under Cancer Care heading.
