Sun Smart Campaign

York

and the surrounding area as part of its annual Sun Smart campaign.

For the past two years, the charity has visited local primary schools distributing baseball caps with additional neck protection to drive home the message to children – and their parents – of the need to take extra care in the sun.

Last year the charity also issued sample bottles of sun cream and they will do this again this year. “This year we are extending our campaign to take in even more schools,” said Dick Hubbard, a retired teacher and chairman of York Against Cancer’s Education Committee.

“After getting such a super reaction from children, schools and parents in 2007 we knew we had to extend the campaign this year.” Dick explained: “The key to making an impression on the children is devising a fun way of getting across the serious message about the need to take care in the sun.

“We are aware that we must not frighten them too much about the dangers of exposure to the sun, but we do encourage them to keep covered up and we reinforce the message by giving them free hats.”
