Rosemary Clements
Huntington Shop, Hospital Stall and Christmas Shop
‘When retirement loomed in the summer of 2003, I approached the charity to see if I could be of use in the Huntington shop. I wanted to do something different from previous voluntary work and, as a former therapeutic radiographer, I could empathise with the aims and works of York Against Cancer.
There have been no regrets! It is a happy and friendly office and no two sessions are the same; I could be checking deliveries, pricing cards and goods, stuffing envelopes or stapling Carol Service sheets between serving customers. Then there are street collections and the Christmas shop if one wishes to help there. The level of commitment is entirely up to each volunteer.’
Betty Wreglesworth
Huntington Shop, Hospital Stall and Christmas Shop
‘My first awareness of cancer was my father in law who was diagnosed in 1950 and passed away within 32 weeks and my mum in 1951 who lived on to 86.
This aroused my thoughts to how to be able to help people in similar positions and wanted to find a charity where money collected was used to assist patients and carers and kept running expenses very low. Ten years ago a friend already working for York Against Cancer invited me to join as a volunteer doing anything I can to help them. I work in the Hospital stall, the shop in Huntington and always help with the Christmas shop.’
